Gary Yourofsky is an interesting fellow....

If you are unfamiliar with him, you can visit ADAPTT.org and learn more. At the website you can learn about his arrest record and the fact that he has been banished from 5 countries. Why? Because he promotes the notion that Animals Deserve Absolute Protection Today and Tomorrow (the source of the acronym ADAPTT), nor is he adverse to taking direct action to protect animals...including releasing mink from a fur farm, chaining his neck to a car axle to prevent entrance to a circus (that used animals) and other activisms.

On his website I found the statement: "...go vegan and refuse to consume anything that once had a face, a mother or a bowel movement. Veganism is the only way to live in absolute peace with all of our planetary companions." Excellent!

You can also begin to do your part for those who cannot speak for themselves by living as an ethical vegan.

Another excellent blog post!

I very much admire Gary Yourofsky, I posted a video of his lecture on my blog about a year or so ago. Professor Gary Francione was a follower up until then. He contacted me and very much objected, claiming that I promote violence on my blog. Dr Francione also objects to Dr. Steven Best. I was then contacted via Twitter and through email by two of Dr. F's followers accusing me of promoting violence. I told them & Dr. Francione that in my opinion the current situation for the non-human animal is so dire that every voice is needed and for me it's all about the animals and not anyone's approval..They are the reason I have a pre-amble posted just above every blog post. Personally, I don't feel Gary Yourofsky nor Dr. Best are promoting violence. They choose a more difficult, less comfortable, less safe path than Prof. Gary Francione. I've noticed that there's an awful lot of friction, back-biting and control issues among Animal Rights Activists that is not helping the animals one bit.

I'm very thankful for folks like Gary Yourofsky. They do make me feel guilty and inadequate to an extent. But I'm glad that he and others like him are out there. Although I honestly believe that speaking out alone is very important and worthwhile and a great thing - there's that saying "actions speak louder than words". Some actions are louder than others. I wish my actions were louder, but I'm glad there are those out there who ARE 'shouting'.

Thank you Patty for commenting and for the information. I am marginally aware of some of the conflicts you reference...my primary interest, like yours, is in helping to reduce the suffering in the world. Mr. Yourofsky seems to be also dedicated to that notion.

That anonymous comment was me!! I don't know how I didn't catch that before I sent the comment. Oops!

Thank you Patty for your comment. I agree with you that bickering among activists is not a positive thing. On the other hand, discussion of and consideration of differences in perspective is, in and of itself, not necessarily a bad thing. However, if it interferes with assisting our fellow animals...then differences need to be held in abeyance.

Interesting indeed. And banned from Canada? How rude! Maybe I can write to someone about that...

@Patty: Sadly, I'm not at all surprised by their reaction.

I went to one of Gary Yourofsky's presentations - He is electric! I could barely take my eyes or attention away from him, but did so on several occasions to observe the audience. I can name only a few people who would have that kind of impact.

In one hour he addresses every issue surrounding animal use. All the traditions, religious views, myths, lies... All the ways animals are harmed - But most importantly - All the choices we can make instead.

I also spoke with him afterwards, and I don't think you could ask for a more respectful, gentle and kind individual. To confuse his advocacy and his acts of liberation as "violence" insults and warps what that word truly means. Anally electrocuting helpless animals (regardless of motivation) - Now THAT's violence!

I'm so glad VeganElder that you've posted his videos - Everyone speaking on the animals behalf would benefit from watching! :)

I do admit, I greatly admire Gary Yourofsky. I'm actually writing a book about animal rights to show my class. And one half of the book is about Gary. He inspired me to watch out for any animals in pain. Also, I've stopped using animal products. I always tell my friend when she uses an animal product, "That's like using yourself. That animal had a heart, feelings, and could feel the pain that was used when it died." Or to fur coats "You wear the coat of guilt." This one person has changed my whole life, and I like it better this way. Thank you, Gary. And thank you for posting about him!
