China bans animal circuses....

according to this article at the About Animal Rights blog, this ban prohibits animal performances in circuses and zoos. Thank you, China....maybe one day other countries of the world will follow your example and act to eliminate these sources of misery and cruelty.

I wonder when enough awareness of the disgusting cruelty and exploitation of animals by "entertainment" venues such as circuses and rodeos is going to result in their being prohibited from using animals in performances or "contests" here in the United States? If you want to become more aware of the cruelty in circuses, visit here, or here, or here (some videos have graphic images of cruelty). The ASPCA lists 10 things you can do to fight circus cruelty, the number one thing is to boycott circuses that feature or use animal performers.

As for rodeos, remember, these are events where the "skills" practiced are those that were (and are) used by human animals to identify, control and transport cow animals to a slaughterhouse. This is similar to the honoring and glorification of the skills used by the Nazi human animals to identify, control and transport their human animal victims to the slaughterhouses they called concentration camps.

Rodeos are about "contests" of "proficiency" at various methods of control, enslavement and death....this is "entertainment"?

Causing fear or pain in a living, sentient being for "entertainment" or "pleasure" is pretty much the definition of the word sadism. Maybe if folks wanted "truth in advertising" rodeos should be renamed "sadeos"....fun for sadists....get your kicks watching others be terrorized and hurt.

If you are someone that believes circuses and rodeos (that use animals other than human animals) should be allowed, I would ask you to consider if you would want yourself or your child to be subjected to the kind of treatment these non-human animals receive, to be subjected to the "training" they are forced to endure, to the kind of life they have to live, to separation from family and friends so someone could make a profit off of you or your child. And, when you were no longer needed or profitable....you or your child would be killed. Would you want that? .....obviously no one would....then why allow this to be done to others? Why?

The cultural trance hides the truth that we all.....bears, cats, rabbits, humans, trout, finches, robins, turtles, cows....we all are brother and sister...we all are children of planet earth....we all love life, we all can hurt, we all can feel joy, we all have friends, family.............we are the same...we just look different and talk different and have different strengths and weaknesses...that's all. That's all.......

I give them 1 point for this and thats it. Rabbits are treated horribly there along with other "edible" furry babies. They need to pass more humane laws on how they raise/kill their food. (As we do)

Circus-dont go, dont approve.
Zoos-the only animals that should be in zoos are those animals that cannot make it in the wild. They should be places of education and wonder not places of breeding and jails for healthy animals captured in the wild. My personal opinion-if a species is dying out breeding that species in a zoo does nothing. They dont release them to the wild.

I heard something this morning on NPR about people eating tiger tacos? I didnt catch the whole story and I hope I misunderstood that.

Thanks Christina for commenting. Each small movement helps. I'm not familiar with the NPR reference, I too hope it was a misunderstanding.

I am STUNNED! Of all places in the world, China, with one of the most horrible abuse records against all living creatures... wow! Good for them to do this. I'm happily stunned and allowing myself to feel a little glimmer of hope that maybe, just maybe, they will not stop with the circuses and zoos. Maybe they will continue on the path of compassion. Before I read this post, I would never have believed they'd ban anything that was cruel to anyone - furry, feathered, scaly or other. Thanks for sharing this news!

Thank you Krissa for your comment. You just never know, do you...

Thanks Christina for commenting...even if you misplaced it...it's still a pretty good comeback.

Regarding China... I think we failed miserably by allowing the Olympics to validate them as a "civilized" country. But, that's politics and economics for you. We hardly even cared that they deny human rights, and spent our money gladly over there... I too am amazed that they are "progressive" enough to ban animal use in circuses. I can't help but wonder what their motive really is?

Christina... You are correct about "tiger/lion tacos". Sick isn't it?

And veganelder, your points about rodeos and the glorification of the cattle-herding traditions are spot on! I have a very large gripe with rodeos. Most people excuse the animal abuse saying that there are veterinarians on the premises to insure that the animals aren't mistreated. Ha! There are vets at bullfights too - So what???

But the thing that really irks me most about rodeos is that most of these bull-calves, cows and "doggies" are sent limping (if they can still walk) to the meat packing plants once their "purpose" is done... Such a ruse "humane slaughter" is!

Which does make me wonder... Where are all the "banned" Chinese circus animals headed? :(

Thank you Bea for commenting. Rodeos are horrid exhibitions of torturing animals for "entertainment. Children in the west and southwest are exposed firsthand to this cruelty on a regular basis.

Love the term sadeos! And Christina's comeback -- priceless. But I too am wondering about China's motive and method.
